Outdoor adventure in Mongolia and the Gobi Deasert

In the country there is no car rental without a native driver in Mongolia, why becomes clear as soon as we leave the capital for the adventure trip into the wide open panorama. Here is the lowest population density in the world with 1.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. A third of the population lives in the capital which is Ulaanbaatar which is the capital, the remaining two million spread over an area that is more than four times the size of Germany.

When on your own the outdoor trip quickly can become a nightmare. Along the highways are truck stops from "time to time" serving rather simple food e.g. in our case veal with noodles plus a thin hot drink. Animals do it differently as seen with this vultures.

In the evening we reached the ancient capital of Karakorum, long time ago the seat of the Khans and today a loose collection of small houses and tents. The Mongols are nomadic people never staying too long at the same place.

For dinner traditional Mongolian food is served in one of the typical round tents, known as yurts. What to eat?  Jemmy, the national dish of boiled sheep's head which tastes good and the meat is real tender meat. After eating, a old man come in for an entertainment session. His face consists of wrinkles only; he probably spends all of his life outdoor where wind and weather tanned his skin. On his cloth proudly showing a medal which he got as an award for his efforts to preserve Mongolian culture.

The rather unfamiliar sound and song creates a atmosphere of melancholy he played string instruments, each decorated with horse heads .

A look into the outside shows, it’s silent and cold. At night the temperature drops to minus 25 degrees Celsius. The only heat comes from a small oven in the center of the tent is the small oven fired by dry wood.

The next day, the road suddenly ends, the trail continues through the frozen steppe. How the driver finds the way, remains his secret since signs no longer exist. Later we arrived at the Terelj National Park and entered via a canyon which leads to a waterfall which is completely
frozen.

From here we continue the journey on small, shaggy ponies. As the animals start galloping without warning, everyone has to struggle to keep himself in the saddle, they kids are laughing.
Next day, the Jeep rumbles across the steppe, the last road is a distant memory. For crossing a stream the driver take the direct route and when the front wheels find ground, the ice gives way, and the back sinks into the icy water.  Our driver shouts" Shit " and that says everything, he laughs and lights a cigarette.

He tries to get out from the stream but no way to do so. Coincidently there was a village not far off, he went there and an hour later a truck came to help and pulling the car out.

Travel in Portugal

Travel in Portugal show some grandiose panoramas here are some outdoor hits

Castles in the Sintra Hills : One of the most attractive destination when travel in Portugal

The mountains of Sintra in Portugal are somehow like a jewelry box : castles , ruins and enchanted palaces with lush gardens line the roads in the north-west of Lisbon. The top architectural treasure of the region was created by a German. That is the Palace of Pena which looks a bit alike Neuschwanstein in south Germany, but Pena was completed in 1854 and the Bavarian castle was begun in 1869, which seems to be the other way around.

How to travel there?

The Pena Palace is one of the main attractions of Portugal and with its fairytale appearance a real attraction and easy to reach because only around 30 km northwest of Lisbon. Towering the hill at 529 meters the Romans called it “Mountain of the Moon" it is extending to the Atlantic Ocean and has its foothills at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of Europe.

From Rossio train station in Lisbon's city center, the streetcar departs every 20 minutes for Sintra. The journey takes about 40 minutes. At the terminus Sebastião Moura scooter rickshaws are waiting. First it virtually crawls the serpentine roads up to the Paço da Vila , a city palace from the 14th Century  with two 33 meter high conical chimneys placed over the castle's kitchen. The interior of the former royal residence is overwhelming.

In contrast to the polluted air in Lisbon Sintra has a real pleasant climate and temperature which is one of the reasons why the Kings spent the summer here. In spring and autumn it often rains heavily just right for the rich vegetation.

To enjoy the best views all the way down to the Atlantic, some effort is required. The driver has its limit at the entrance of the Castle of the Moors, from their a steep paved path makes it easy to walk . The Moorish Castle was built in the eighth century, it was conquered by the Portuguese at 1147 and now a ruin although a well-preserved one.

A day trip to Sintra might be a bit to short, two days would be sufficient. The drive through the hilly landscape shows numerous interesting villas built by the nobility in the 19th Century. In an exceptionally beautiful garden with lush vegetation is the palace Quinta de Regaleira with a beautiful view it is an architectural jewel.

The Pena National Palace is a Unesco World Heritage site since 1995 - as the whole area. According to the romantic spirit of the German architect Baron Ludwig von Eschwege who built the palace on behalf of the German-born Prince Consort Fernando II medieval and exotic architectural styles were mixed.

Portugal is a republic since 1910, the palace is open to visitors who like this visual jewel.
